Promise To Pay

A unsigned check reads, "Pay to the order of Alissa Suzanne ... OneThousand Dollars."

How much is the check worth? Nothing!

If I sign my name on the signature line, however, the check is valuable—worth $1,000 (provided, of course, that I have the amount in the bank). A valid , signed check indicates that I possess the power to back up my promise to pay. How much is the piece of paper then worth? $1,000!

One Thousand Dollars. But if the recipient does not believe that I am able to do what I have promised, and she does not go to the bank and cash the check, it has no value to her.

字彙
Valid
